Why does the heart beat faster when performing a strenuous activity than when resting?

It's because the body needs more oxygen when it is more active. The body needs to make more energy to work harder so the cells would use recources faster. Oxygen is carried in the blood streams and the body pumps blood faster to keep up with the demand for recources. So the heart pumps blood faster.
