My 8 month old son confuses me?

HE HAS 4 TEETH AND ACTS LIKE HE IS STARVING WHEN IT COMES TIME FOR HIS SOLID FEEDINGS..BUT when i feed him his gerber out of the jar he gags on it.. so i tried steaming a carrot..he loves it but only if i put it in his mouth.. he refuses to try to pick it up by himself.. should i be worried because i know he should have the finger grasp down by now
