Christians: Why do so many conversion testimonies begin with something similar to this?

People who have tough lives and go on destructive paths often come to a realization that they need to turn things around and they often take up a faith in god/religion to help them get through their problems because they don't think that they can do it on their own or that any other person will help them. I think it's just so common to have it be Christianity because it is the dominant religion in the country, and is the most easily accessible, not to mention that to which people are mostly exposed.
